Vodafone taking steps to overcome ‘constraints’
29/9/2009

Vodafone has partially overcome ‘capacity constraints’ in its international link, which has caused difficulties for many customers to avail of the service provider’s Dh50/minute overseas call promotion.

A Vodafone Qatar spokesperson told Gulf Times yesterday the ‘issue will be resolved completely’ in the next few days.
“We are not yet there, but our engineers have been able to add significant capacity in the last few days. In the next few days our callers will have enough capacity on our international link to connect to places around the world,” the spokesperson said.
Many customers were able to connect to international numbers through the Vodafone network yesterday without much difficulty.
The situation was critical until a couple of days ago, when callers had to dial repeatedly to get connected to an international number through the Vodafone network.
Recently, Vodafone Qatar CEO Grahame Maher told Gulf Times his company was talking to ictQATAR and Qtel to get additional capacity in the latter’s international cable landing station in the country. Since Vodafone does not have its own cable landing station, the service provider handles its international calls through Qtel.
He had said permanent solution to capacity constraints could be found only when Vodafone’s own international cable landing station began operation.
“We have speeded up the process and I expect our cable landing station to be ready within two years,” Maher said.
